New Job

I will be embarking on a short film project in the next coming week as 1st AD working with Writer/Director, Dionne King and Cinematographer Kate Reid. The pre-production meeting is early next week followed by 3 days of shooting in a 3 bedroom flat. This is going to be a great opportunity to work on a professional production, although I approach all my work with the same attitude.

End of Foundation Year

A little late with the post but I finally finished my F Degree with distinction. Just thought I'd add the final touch to the blog for now. There will be much more when I start the BA in September for anyone who is faintly interested in my blogs.

End of Foundation degree

Yes we're coming to the end of year 2 at Plymouth College of Art and it's a mad rush to the finish line. Priority time has been spent on the Consolidation part of the degree. For me that means my new screenplay which had the working title, The Other Side of Midnight. The actual screen title is Behind Closed Doors which more reflects the outcome of the Final Draft, now complete. Approx 25 minutes of Murder Mystery Thriller if you can fit it all in in that amount of time. I'm hopeful.

Trial in After Effects

Ive been a little lost in After Effects for the last few days.Trying to work out how to use it. This is my first effort. It's a simple setup but it still took me some time to find my way around the controls.

UPDATE Personal Log

With the idea for my new short 'The OSOM' firmly in place and on paper (the safest place to be) I have started work on the script and since I have had little else on my mind for the past week (eating, sleeping, dreaming it) actually getting to grips with it was a huge relief. Today's discussions about the script / film 'Hard Candy' were very helpful and consolidated a lot of very useful writing and direction tips. Colleagues are beginning to respond to my script idea the more I have a clear vision of the plot. That always helps! Offers to help have now started arriving but I need to concentrate on a good script first.. Giving myself 2 weeks to have a good first draft.

It's tough for a Dinosaur.

College Days
It takes a lot of steam for a Dinosaur to build up to full power. All that chewing on the information before regurgitation gives one a serious headache! you get to analysing the first page marked notes and you're already half way through the term. Whoosh where did that go? The art in getting older is not to notice too much that you haven't got a hope of remembering a fraction of it and just act cool which is sometimes embarrassing.

Dinosaur: Preliminary production meeting..

Dinosaur: Preliminary production meeting..

Preliminary production meeting..

Barbican Steps, Plymouth
Initial meeting with two of my colleagues, Katy M and Steve B.
We discussed the outline of the story and how it may be possible to adapt it to fit the time frame for completion (June 2010). After all, what I have at the moment is a first stage outline of a story. We kicked around some ideas about how to shorten production time, so I guess you could call this a production meeting.  Katy's involvement is as production designer and Steve's with cinematography. Myself as writer/director. We are committed to the first stage of development which would be to produce a short scene from the development script in the style of the finished product.

Libatique and Spike Lee team again

Clive Owen Inside Man  Matthew Libatique

Libatique paints his scenes with extraordinary combinations of light and exploding cinematic sequences. His notable film achievements can be seen in PI, Requiem for a Dream, Gothika and The Fountain.

Darren Aronofsky and Angelina Jolie Adapting 'Serena'

Report on Wes Anderson

The Guardian website is similar to a blogspot. The layout is simple and connecting to links is easy. Wes Andersons name came up near the top of the pile on Google as a reputable film maker, who just happens to be one of my favourite. Guess I'll have to get an article published in the Guardian before I can go up the list.

Staring on the creative process

The hardest part of any project is summing up the initial idea for your script. Making sure it has at least a skeleton; the core element of what you are trying to say and  what you want the audience to see. This in turn will shape the style of the film/short.
The amount of detail that goes into every character should be carefully considered whether it's a short or a feature. Talking it over with your friends and colleagues is a great way to find holes in your characters and story from a fresh pair of eyes as it is easy to get bogged down with your story and hanker after visuals more than storytelling. Make sure that the beginning and end of the story have a clear link and are equally strong. There's nothing worse for an audience than the feeling of being let down. They want to feel satisfied that they've watched something more than just a title. If you find a hole in your story rethink it and don't get too stuck thinking that it must be exactly as you see it, that is not until you have that satisfied feeling yourself that you have the three basics; Beginning, middle and end but not necessarily in that order.Does it have a tale to tell, how strong is that tale and what is the outcome.
Yes I am talking to myself!

The Case for Chelsea Black
The tale of a teenage dreamer.

'To answer David Bowies’ question; ‘is there life on Mars’? Well there may not be life on Mars but there is a life on Earth that may as well be from Mars. Take the lives of the inner city kids for instance: descendents of the post-war boom in single parent culture and concrete home replacements, the rise of the tenement, the council estates and mountains of rubbish; chronic alcoholism and drug culture, victims of continuous social reforms and economics.
There’s is the legacy of unfulfilled dreams.
Chelsea is a product of this design'.......

Its funny how things pan out during the day. Having talked about our (the class) new end of year productions and goals it's so interesting to finally hear where our true interests lie. The door opens and suddenly your back to your old creative self again. The group have fun discussing each other's projects and it becomes obvious from here on  who you will be looking to work with for your final project. Very exciting days ahead and of course, much work.
I've been writing my project for the last year but of course although the heart of the project is there the rest is in note form and with an initial presentation in 2 weeks I will start by dissecting the notes (and mountain of audio) and plan to shoot two trial scenes with principal actress and 2 male extras. I have had enough experience to know that very little in life runs smoothly so let battle commence....YKT

Woops

Oh dear,
I'm new to this and appear to be following my own blog which is completely boring! Had one of those mornings! Went in to college only to find the lesson was cancelled, I guess  it's one of the hazards of being part-time. Have now been studying for 3 and a half years altogether and wonder when I'll ever finish. Being part-time isn't really much fun as you're always in between years and therefore never really get to bond properly with colleagues. Sometimes I think 'what the e hell am I doing this for'? after all it's not as if I'm starting a career! and by the time I graduate I'll be nearly 56 years young and almost due to retire. I guess it's all credit to our system that I even have the chance to study for which I am very grateful....Oh well good morning all...

The Films of Jean-Pierre Jeunet

Jeunet is probably one of my favourite Film makers. I was introduced to his flamboyant work in his 1991 film 'Delicatessen; whose story segues between nightmare and fairytale, as it follows the residents of an apartment block above a butchers shop. With animal meat in short supply, the menacing butcher has begun to look elsewhere for fresh stock. Unfortunately for him, his lovelorn daughter alerts the troglodytes -a group of sewer-dwelling vegetarian rebels - to his cannibalistic goings on.
Jeunet teams with Marc Caro to create the post-apocalyptic scenario.

STARRING: Marie-Laure Dougnac, Dominique Pinon, Karin Viard, Jean Claude Dreyfus, Ticky Holgado, Anne Marie Pisani, Edith Ker, Mickael Todde, Boban Janevski
1991, 95 Minutes, Directed by: Jean-Pierre Jeunet, Marc Caro
